B.K.S. iyengar (Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar) was born in 1918. he is the founder of iyengar yoga, and one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world.

iyengar was born into a poor family in the grip of an influenza pandemic, which left him very weak. to improve his health condition through yoga practice, he became a student of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is often referred to as "the father of modern yoga." at the age of 18, he was sent to prune to spread the teachings of yoga, where he also experimented with various other techniques, which we know today as as iyengar yoga.

iyengar yoga focuses on body alignment and is useful in physical therapy because it assists in the manipulation of inflexible or injured area. iyengar pioneered the use of "props" such as cushions and blocks, and designed the asanas (poses) to be adjusted based on a person's stage of recovery to be accessible for all; elderly, injured, or ill students to enjoy the full benefits via fully "supported" methods requiring less muscular effort.

アイアンガーは1918年に貧しい家に生まれた。当時家族が住んでいたインドのベッラー市は流行性インフルエンザが猛威を振るっていたため、生まれた時からとても弱い子供であった。健康状態を徐々に改善するために、現代ヨーガの父と言われるクリシュナマチャリアの下でヨーガのアーサナ修行を始めた。少年期に患っていた病気がすべて治って、その後クリシュナマチャリアの激励を受けプーナ市に移動し勉強と研究を重ねた。指導の方法などを磨いたのが現在知られるアイアンガーヨガ。

アイアンガーヨガは肉体と精神の柔軟性、リラクセーションを得ることに加えて、強靭さとスタミナを増進させ体の歪みを正していくことに重きをおいています。

経験が浅くても故障歴があっても、様々な道具類を使うことでヨガの効果を最大限に引き出せる点が、他のヨガとの違いと言えます。ヨガの初心者であっても、いくつかの簡単な道具を使うことで過度な緊張やケガを恐れることなく、徐々に強さや自信、柔軟性を築いていけます。

Action is movement with intelligence. The world is filled with movement. What the world needs is more conscious movement, more action.
